1. Major PEI Development Projects - Oran Canada called it a "minor blip". What is Dyne Holdings calling it? "Campbell said he has approval to proceed with the project if the parking issue can be solved. The developers are due to break ground in March." The Oran Canada project was to build $25 million worth of condominiums on top of the Waterfront Mall in Summerside. Now Dyne Holdin...[More]2. 3. Economic Downturn & PEI - Has the economic downturn really hit PEI? Kathy Hambly, executive director of the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce doesn't think so and neither do I. I haven't heard of any mass layoffs, except for Bell Canada/Aliant. Then again, when things are going good we don't exactly see lots of new companies coming in adding 100's of jobs to our economy like in the bigger centers. I still be...[More]
4. Was I Ever Wrong - Boy oh boy was I ever wrong! Unemployment is up to 11.8%! I guess we took a bigger hit then I was aware of in December! CBC News reports on the biggest rise in job losses in the region was for PEI (1.1% increase in December). ...[More]
5. Wow, what a year! - Today I opened my letter from my financial consultant, Dick Young. The letter was obviously well constructed very cleverly stating numerous issues for the demise of my mutual funds and RRSP's through the Investors Group. Of those issues the letter goes onto state credit issues was a big factor in the loss of equity. The letter goes on to state, "Although you will likely see a decline in the value of your portfolio on your December 31, 2008 statement...". I would assume from this letter, that Investors Group is beco...[More]
6. Charlottetown Going to Decrease Vacant Space Downtown - Charlottetown is planning on making some changes to encourage more busineses to move downtown. A CBC report states the city is going to start targetting empty buildings in the downtown core and get them to reopened for business. A perfect example is the old CFCY building downtown and across from it, the old tweels corner store. The buildings have been empty for an extremely long time and it's pretty obvious there is little ...[More]
7. Tourism Charlottetown - Again Tourism Charlottetown did a great job with another festival. The Jack Frost Festival brought thousands of people to Prince Edward Island during the slower winter months and the economic impact was expected to top $1.5 million according to the report in todays The Guardian. I am a firm believer that Tourism Charlottetown should continue to lead the way in performing such great revenue generators for local business. By pulling such events of, it does nothing but increase t...[More]
8. Bank Of Canada Lowering Interest Rates? I'm Against It! - The Bank of Canada has been lowering interest rates to try and get consumers back on some sort of spending spree. The problem is, the only people who have access to the Bank of Canada, is the banks. Normal Joes like you and me don't exactly have access to borrow money from the Bank of Canada at their posted rates. The Bank of Canada will lower their interest rates in hopes that the chartered banks will also lower theirs to help increase spending. By having a lower rate, it makes money cheaper to borrow and spend. T...[More]
9. Dodge Comparision (2007 to 2009) - I found an old paper from November 17th, 2007 and in it is an advertisement for Dodge cars/trucks. They have listed a 2008 Dodge Avenger SXT for $359 a month or $23,499. The cost today for a 2009 Dodge Avenger SXT is $24,480 or $187 biweekly ($374 a month). A 2008 Dodge Caliber in 2007 was "starting from $15,995", today they start at $14,895. The 2008 Jeep Patriot "Starting From $16,995" today starts at $16,145. The ad had a few other options as well but it was hard to judge what was w...[More]
10. Update: Dear Island East. Hypocrite Much? -
I just finished reading in the Eastern Graphic how Island East selected HeadSpace Design of Halifax, Nova Scotia. I am sure Headspace Design is capable of doing the job but that's not the point. Throughout the article it was saying how Island East wasn't happy with the previous Island company that did their website. They said that the company, based in Charlottetown, did not develop an easy to use website and that was one reason they selected Headspace Design. A few paragraphs later, the article g...[More]
