1. Banning Water From Schools - The "Council of Canadians" wants the Island government to ban bottled water from schools on PEI.
- Tap water in all Island schools should be safe to drink and readily available from fountains and in cafeterias. - Many bottled water brands come from the same source as public tap water but are sold as somehow more pure. Yet bottled water is tested less frequently for safety than tap water. Water should not be commodified and students should not h...[More]

3. Being More Fuel Efficient - With the rising price of gas, buying items for your car that will make it more fuel efficient is certainly becoming more attractive. Before I made any engine modifications to my car, I did some research as to what I could add/remove/upgrade on my car to make it the extra miles on a full tank of gas. One suggestion was a Cold Air Intake. “A cold air intake is a system used to bring down the temperature of the air going into a car for the p...[More]

5. The Paypal Email Scam - I know this an older scam but, a client of mine sent me an email today asking if the following email had something to do with their website. ----- Original Message ----- From: "PayPal" Sent: Friday, August 29, 2008 2:33 AM Subject: Limited Account Access Dear PayPal Member, As part of our security measures, we regularly screen activity in the PayPal system. 6. First Spam on New Domain - wirelessandmobile.wowgao.com - Wireless & Mobile Expo and Conference - Since the sale of dotServing, I decided to track where I submit my email addresses too. One of the websites I submitted my email address to was 2008 Wireless & Mobile Expo and Conference. Today, I received the first spam email message and it was sent through the email address I use for communication when it comes to this conference. This implies that either the Wireless & Mobile Expo and Conference are either selling my emai...[More]

7. Whose holding IRAC Accountable? - Today the cost of oil dropped to $101.34. The last time oil was this low, was February 29th, 2008. On that same day, IRAC increase the cost of gas by a penny. In that same news release, IRAC made reference to the increasing cost of oil and the record setting prices. Global crude pr...[More]

8. Reliability of Information on the Internet - When the Internet started out years ago, you could believe a lot of what is on the internet. There was no myspace, no facebook, no blogspot, not even a PEIinfo! Now a days, companies like Google are changing the way things work. For ever and a day ago, it was all about content being king. The more content you had, the better ranking you'll have...[More]

9. OpenOffice/NeoOffice - The Free Microsoft Office Alternatives - For the last numerous years, or since Microsoft Office 2002, I have been using anything but Microsoft Office software. Part of the reason for this is a brief period in time I used a Linux operating system and obviously Microsoft Office wasn't readily available. Instead of Microsoft Office, today I use OpenOffice or NeoOffice. OpenOffice is an opensource software package that performs the exact same duties as Microso...[More]

10. Easy to use UPEI Searchable Timetable website - Today I created a UPEI timetable database which users can search to find out what classes are offered between the requested times. This makes the timetable much more easier to search for courses that people may be interested in taking between certain times. An example: Last semester I had a class on Tuesday afternoon at 2pm-3pm and Tuesday night at 7pm-10pm. I wanted to take a course between 3pm-4pm but did not see anything on the official timetable. Upon closer inspection l...[More]

11. Economic Downturn & PEI - Has the economic downturn really hit PEI? Kathy Hambly, executive director of the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce doesn't think so and neither do I. I haven't heard of any mass layoffs, except for Bell Canada/Aliant. Then again, when things are going good we don't exactly see lots of new companies coming in adding 100's of jobs to our economy like in the bigger centers. I still be...[More]

12. I made it myself this morning - I am sitting in at Merchantman Gallery which is a relatively new little cafe at 56 Water St. The cafe is extremely small and is connected to the back of the Merchantman Pub's kitchen. Although I am sitting beside the window overlooking water street, you can hear the people in the kitchen as they do the things they do. The cafe offers has a busy feeling to it because of the sound coming from the kitchen. The smallness of it makes me feel I should be making my own hot chocolate, especially with the hot chocolate stuff being closer ...[More]

13. Unofficial UPEI Course Timetable Updates - I have made some updates to the unofficial UPEI course time table that include a update function that allows people to update the schedule database with the click of a button. Of course, I have set it up so it doesn't sound so technical for those who are technically inclined/worried about blowing something up. To date there seems to be an average of 8.75 searches per user and the user's are spending an average of 8 minutes on it howe...[More]

14. Charlottetown Going to Decrease Vacant Space Downtown - Charlottetown is planning on making some changes to encourage more busineses to move downtown. A CBC report states the city is going to start targetting empty buildings in the downtown core and get them to reopened for business. A perfect example is the old CFCY building downtown and across from it, the old tweels corner store. The buildings have been empty for an extremely long time and it's pretty obvious there is little ...[More]

15. I Am On Keyboard #3 This Week - Earlier this week I went out to purchase a new keyboard as my old one was no longer working. I initially purchased a Logitech EX110 Desktop keyboard for $59.95 from Staples. Within 24 hours, it was obvious the keyboard was not meant to be used 8 hours a day. When clicking the left mouse button it started to make a really annoying sound on top of the normal mouse button click. Twenty-four hours later I was back at Staples thinking...[More]

16. Tourism Charlottetown - Again Tourism Charlottetown did a great job with another festival. The Jack Frost Festival brought thousands of people to Prince Edward Island during the slower winter months and the economic impact was expected to top $1.5 million according to the report in todays The Guardian. I am a firm believer that Tourism Charlottetown should continue to lead the way in performing such great revenue generators for local business. By pulling such events of, it does nothing but increase t...[More]

17. Bank Of Canada Lowering Interest Rates? I'm Against It! - The Bank of Canada has been lowering interest rates to try and get consumers back on some sort of spending spree. The problem is, the only people who have access to the Bank of Canada, is the banks. Normal Joes like you and me don't exactly have access to borrow money from the Bank of Canada at their posted rates. The Bank of Canada will lower their interest rates in hopes that the chartered banks will also lower theirs to help increase spending. By having a lower rate, it makes money cheaper to borrow and spend. T...[More]

18. The Connector Idea Appeals To Me Too! - Currently the sun is shining and its a beautiful day outside. In fact, I think I am going to take a shot at going to the beach.....err wait. Maybe not. It's freezing raining, its miserable and to go anywhere in this city we must walk through the freezing rain. Not exactly a motivating reason to go anywhere. A connector in the downtown core would make more sense then anything, especially on rainy miserable days. A perfect example is the connectors in Halifax. You can walk to a lot of places without going outside. In Charlottetown,...[More]

19. How to Prevent Spam/Don't Put Your Email On Your Website - In April 2007, Nucleus Research did research on the cost of spam. The cost per year per employee was $712 (that's 16 seconds a day and making $31,000). By cost, I mean lost wages due to lack of productivity. So companies end up purchasing spam protection software. Internet service provider's, web hosting companies and other email hosting services typically have some sort of email filtering service but it doesn't eliminate all spam (and if it does, there's probably legit emails your not getting!). It's a band aid approach. ...[More]

20. Winners And Losers Of Minimum Wage Increases And Job Losses - CBC Reported on the minimum wage increase on PEI. Minimum wage is going up 40 cents this year over the next 7 months. Increasing a company's cost like minimum wage when the economy is in a downtown is a horrible idea. Some people think, oh 40 cents is nothing out of the owners pockets. The big bad business owner(s) can afford to be out 40 cents. That's great and while people view the business owners as a bad person, th...[More]

21. A Great Opportunity: Cavendish Beach Music Festival - The Cavendish Beach Music Festival is expecting a crowd of 25,000 people to attend it's concert. Before I get into some obvious reasons of why this concert is good for PEI, here's some information on the concert. The concert promoters are expecting 25,000 people to attend this three day event. Tickets are $59 for the first day, $79 for the second and third day or a three day pass is available for $159. Since we are using the numbers provided by the Festival, let's use some conservative assumptions. Let's s...[More]

22. Too Many Concerts This Year To Blame For Lack Of Ticket Sales - This year must be a record setting year for the maritime provinces. With 10 major music acts coming to our provinces, the 2 million maritimer’s have a lot of options as to which band they want to go see. The question is, can a population of 2 million people support the 10 acts? With the Festival of Lights struggling with their numbers, as well as both the new Virgin Mobile Halifax concert and the new Cavendish Beach Music Festival, I am not sure we will be seeing the big major concerts we have this year. These ...[More]

23. Cavendish Beach Music Festival: Lotta People Talking - A lot of people I've talked with are talking about the Cavendish Beach Music Festival and how they are going to get or have gotten tickets to the event. The concert is coming July 10th-12th and I've expressed before that this concert is going to be a hit. I have not purchased a ticket as of yet. ...[More]

25. Does Our Government Have A Plan? A PEI Spending Spree - I read the budget address thanks to Cynthia Dunsford who was nice enough to give me the government document. In the budget, it stated we are going to be $85.3 million in debt this year which is obviously a large chunk of change.

26. Kiva And Why I am A Big Supporter Of It! - KIVA is a micro-financing website. While most people would not find $20-$100 a large sum of money, the people of KIVA do. The idea is lending money to people from poor countries like Cambodia or Ghana so they can build up their business or in some cases assist with...[More]

27. Youtube as a Teaching Tool - My last semester at the University of Prince Edward Island I was taking a Mathematical Economics course. We were taught all kinds of crazy and awesome mathematical equations. As with most my math courses, I struggled. Between writing all the notes down and understanding it all, I was blown away. Then at night I would come home and read this really horribly written text book which didn't help. I needed a new way to learn, a new way to understand. One part I struggled ...[More]

28. Cirque du Soleil - Tonight I had the opportunity to watch the Cirque du Soleil (Circus of the Sun) performance at the waterfront. From the moment (930PM) they started walking down Great George Street I was simply amazed. If you don't intend on attending any of the shows, I highly suggest you at least view the parade down Great George. The parade alone (which is free, starts at 930PM by Province House) will more then likely encourage you to checkout the show. The parade's about 1...[More]

29. Cirque Charlottetown Revisited (w/photos) - Tonight I went back with my camera in hand to take some photos. Chris Wilkinson of Spinphoto advised me what type of lens to get today for my Canon Rebel XTI. So tonight, I used it. Again, another amazing show with a lot more people on the streets tonight then last night! The first is my favorite.
